The Child of Libya - A Short Story

Not a true story or anything. Just something that kind of shows what kind of an event is taking place in Libya. A civil war which has engulfed the country in its flames, and destroyed many families.

Cheerup stood still just as her parents had commanded to before the great civil war took over their peaceful country. But now, peace was more of a far-fetched thought. Day and night, nearly every second, the forces of Gaddafi and the local militants clashed.

The militants relied more heavily on unity, brotherhood and strength. The forces of Gaddafi however were merciless and used every arsenal of weapons they had to shatter that bond of brotherhood, which remained even strong after all those clashes.

Cheerup was just a little girl. An 8-year old girl who was just trying to enjoy life. However, certain circumstances not forbid anything "enjoyable". She stood inside her room, silent as a rock. Emotionless like a doll.
Since morning, the forces of Gaddafi were dropping bombs nearby and firing artillery to wound the militants strength. However, due to no correct position or data, they often fired at the wrong places putting the poor civilians at risk. Not part of the war, but yet a part of it. They really had no choice, all they could do was avoid such dangerous areas.

Cheerup was scared at first when the first time her whole house shook, but not later on - since it was a daily business now. It was like a normal routine.

However, her parents had decided to move out now quickly and move into a neighbor country so that they may provide not only themselves, but Cheerup a life of happiness, and a moment of peace, and not a moment filled with pain, agony and noisy disturbance which left her sleepless at night.

"Mommy, when will this all end?" asked Cheerup

"Soon, very soon. Tonight me and daddy will go out till the market and see if he situation is right for us to move. If it is, we will move tonight" told her mom

"Can I come too. I don't want to stay here alone" said Cheerup

"No! You have to stay here and I promise we'll be back very soon!" told her mom

Cheerup had a bad feeling about this. But she couldn't argue with her mom, since she knew she wouldn't ever agree. All she could do was pray..

The night came pretty quick. Cheerup's parents readied the car. Her mum kissed her on her forehead and told her to "take care of yourself while your gone". And she moved towards her car. Suddenly a voice came from behind her

"MOM" screamed Cheerup

She looked back surpirsed and said "Yes?"

"I love you both" said Cheerup, now with tears in her eyes

"We love you too, dear" said her mom and got into the car and drove away

Cheerup opened up the radio and starting hearing to it. It was the normal everyday chatter. At times you could hear the military chatter or the local militants chatter if the communication lines got mixed up. It had been around 45 minutes while her parents had gone out.

Now, little cheerup turned the knob of the radio to see if something interesting was on. But then something caught her attention. A breaking news?

"We just heard reports that the area of Al-Faliha was bombed by artillery of Gaddafi forces and militants likewise, and the place has been completely destroyed - stay tuned to know more about this upcoming news from our reporter in Libya" roared the radio

Lifeless like a zombie cheerup stood. Tears came in her eyes....Al-Faliha was the same area where her parents had gone to inquire about the situation..
She now trembled with fear. Horrid thoughts snapped into her mind as she started loosing control of sanity.

Why had her parents not arrived? Did her parents leave her ? Did her parents never go to the market and instead left her here cause she was maybe a burden? -- such thoughts popped into the mind of little Cheerup..

She closed her watery eyes and looked out of the window, and she crossed her fingers...as hope was never lost. The hope to see that car turning in from the road ahead with her parents inside it..
